The appeal of this volume is different although the illustrations of the times are equally vivid and illuminating .Walton takes the trouble to explain why he choose the diverse characters that are the subject of his biography: he was a master of pictorial imaging , his writing contains a suppressed humour, and he casts a shaft of light on the more contemplative side of life in the seventeenth century .
