Synopsis: Hassan Fathy, prominent Egyptian architect, describes his plans for the village of New Gourna on the West bank of the River Nile at Luxor, using the traditional Egyptian architectural features of enclosed courtyards, and domed and vaulted roofing, and employing the traditional building material of mudbrick. Appalled by scenes of poverty witnessed in the countryside during his youth his attempt at a remedial project is recorded and includes descriptions of the following: -- The mud roofing, Nubian roof vaulting; the work of Nubian masons; choosing the site at New Gourna ; modern and ancient Egyptian architecture, the role of tradition, individuality in the village, the economic necessity of mudbrick; vernacular architecture of the old Gourna , change with constancy, climate and architecture, the Malkaf or Wind Catch; society and architecture , kinship structure and local custom, socioeconomic considerations; rural crafts in Gourna; the plan of New Gourna , public service buildings, the peasants house; combating Bilharzia ; Gourna: a pilot project; in-service training; a stillborn experiment; rural reconstruction; first season 1945 -- 46 second season 1946 -- 47 third season 1947 -- 48; the search for a patron; the continuation of slander.
