Originally  produced to accompany the exhibition The “Creative Quarters: the art world in London 1700-2000” which took place  at the  Museum of London, from the  30th March  to  the 15th July 2001 this volume is a   comprehensive survey  of London examining its history  though the artistic communities that have flourished in the city from the sixteenth century to the present day .Contents: 1562 to 1690 From The City to the West End ; 1685 to 1,800 Markets for art : Covent Garden  and  Leicester Square; 1,800 to 1835 Rural retreats : Hamstead, Twickenham and Richmond; 1772 to 1850 “Artist’s Street”  in Marylebone; 1860 to 1,900  Alternative paths to  Kensington and Chelsea ; 1905 to 1920 Art movements : Camden town, Bloomsbury , and Fitzrovia ;  1930’s and 1950’s Progressive  Hampstead and Permissive Soho; 1960 to 2,000  Colonizing the  East  End .
