Synopsis: A revealing , searching, in-depth biography of a woman who was one of the most interesting and influential figures of the second half of the eighteenth century . Catherine’s private and extensive public life is thoughtfully and impartially dissected. We learn that although when Catherine took power of the Russian Empire it was a loose knit grouping of unruly provinces; at the end of her reign it was possible to travel without molestation through a series of uniformly administered provinces where earlier there had been widespread unrest with perhaps 200,000 people in semi rebellion among Cossacks, Church serfs and and factory serfs . At the end of Catherine’s reign there had been no disturbances among them for twenty years the population had been increased from 19 million to 29: every big town had its quota of hospitals and orphanages; although at the beginning of Catherine’s bribery had been rife, at the end many officials were elected . Formerly Russia had been considered barbarous ground , best avoided by travellers, by the end of Catherine's reign it ad become part of the English Grand Tour, with banks and an adequate money supply in line with leading commercial countries. More metals were being mined than it ever before, more timber grown and felled , more goods manufactured . During 1794 -8 Russia’s annual exports were running at 57 billion roubles, four times the amount when Catherine came to the throne. Russia had become a more permeable society than Prussia or Austria : and Catherine and had become a sovereign famous in three continents , but as the biography is at pains to point out , Catherine was without airs - at the end of her reign saying “ All I can do for Russia is never more than a drop in the sea . “ Condition: ex library with stickers and stamps but clean and good overall.
