Vol 1, 767 pages: Vol 11, 733 pages: b/w woodcut illustrations throughout; coloured frontispiece to Vol 1: Memoir of the Life of Froissart, Essay on the Works of Froissart, and A Criticism on The Works of Froissart precede The Chronicles in Vol 1. Synopsis: An 1855 edition " translated from the French, with variations and editions from many celebrated manuscripts, by Thomas Johnes Esquire" of a vividly informative history begun at the age of twenty, by John Froissard, born in Valenciennes about the year 1337: and later described in a manuscript taken from the archives of the chapter of St. Monegunda, at Chimay as ' a very celebrated historiographer of his time' who 'has written the wars and Chronicles, and the most remarkable events from the year 1335 until the year of 1400; and according as he himself relates in diverse parts of his history ". This 1885 volume, " The Chronicles of England, France, Spain, and the adjoining countries, from the latter part of the reign of Edward the second to the Coronation Henry IV". records that Froissart stated " he had not the intention of making a dry chronicle wherein facts are simply related with their dates , and in the order they happened, but that he was anxious to write what might be called in truth history , in which the events were presented with all the circumstances which had attended them." Reading this work , some 600 years later, the lasting brilliance of his description is surely proof of his success. Condition: Skillful, sympathetic restoration- not recent: original leather fronts and backs retained: renewed cloth spines covered with original leathers: end papers renewed :an original unattached end paper included with gift inscription dated 1885: small areas of leather missing at ends and edges of spine revealing the brown cloth beneath :corners bumped: slight foxing to title and adjacent pages; contents very clean and good: overall very clean, good and collectable.
