The resulting assessment of all the aspects of events at Dunkirk, including the involvement of both regulars and territorials in the BEF; of manoeuvers, battles, and engagements leading  to the eventual evacuation; the part in events played by  Commanders Gamelin, Georges, von Brauchitsch, Halder, Billotte, von Bock, von Blanchard, von Reichenau, Pownall , and  Generals Dill , Barker, Brownrigg, Lindsell, Franklyn, Martel, Eastwood, Curtis, von  Kleist, Guiderian, Reinhardt, Brooke, Johnson, Montgomery, Alexander, Marshall -Cornwall and Beauman, presents a comprehensive analysis of the resulting failures and successes .  The text is supported by 24 black and white maps and photographic illustration.
