Synopsis: A collection of lectures on the literature of the age of Elizabeth and characters of Shakespear's plays, originally delivered at the Surrey Institution in 1820 with subsequent reprinting in England and America. Illustrated notes included with extracts from texts of quoted authors. A criticism of these lectures was contributed to the Edinburgh Review by the late Mr Justice Talfourd , and subsequently reprinted among his Miscellaneous Works in Philadelphia in 1842. The British Museum has a copy of this volume ( edited in 1820 ) with MSS note by German critic and dramatist, Ludvic Tieck. Contents : Lecture One Introductory. General view of the subject. Lecture Two . On the dramatic writers contemporary with Shakespear ( Sackville) Lyly, Heywood , Middleton and Rowley. Lecture Three. On Marston, Chapman, Decker, and Webster. Lecture Four . On Beaumont and Fletcher, Ben Johnson, Ford and Massinger. Lecture Five. On single plays, poems etc: The Four "Ps" The Return from Parnassus Gammerr Gurtons Needle and other works. Lecture Six. On miscellaneous poems: F. Beaumont, P. Fletcher, Drayton, Daniel,etc: Sir P. Sidney s Arcadia and other works. Lecture Seven. Character of Bacon's works -- compared as to style with Sir Thomas Browne and Jeremy Taylor. Lecture Eight. On the spirit of ancient and modern literature. On the German drama, contrasted with that of the age of Elizabeth.
