- Description: John Tiranti and Co, 1923: Brown cloth hardcover with black lettering to front and spine: approximately 10 by 12.5 inches tall: eight page introduction followed by 84 pages of black and white plates. A letter from the estate office of the Duke of Devonshire at Chatsworth to the publishes, John Tiranti, dated the 30th of January 1922 included. Synopsis: A commanding volume detailing the evolution of the chair including a short summary followed by some 360 clear and comprehensive black and white illustrations of chairs, armchairs, stools and settees throughout the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries ,covering development of the chair are during the reigns of Henry VII, Henry VIII, Elizabeth 1, James 1, James II, Charles II, Oliver Cromwell, William and Mary, Queen Anne, George1, George II, George III, George IV, William VII and Victoria : with sections devoted to chairs designed by cabinetmakers and architects including Chippendale, Hepplewhite, Sheraton, Adam and Manwaring . The illustrations( one-side good-quality paper only) show examples of styles of chairs during all periods, including ancient oak chairs,Gothic chairs. Tudor chairs, the Coronation chair, the Glastonbury armchair, the Jacobean monk chair, the Elizabethan child's chair, the Grinling Gibbons armchair, the ladder back chair, the tapestry chair, the Yorkshire chair, the Masonic chair, the Flemish framed chair, Queen and and William and Mary settees, the Hogarth armchair, the burgomaster chair, Chippendale chairs, Sheraton chairs, Hepplewhite chairs, Adam chairs, Manwaring chairs, and Queen Anne, William and Mary, and Chippendale stools. Pages from Hepplewhite's design book and Chippendale's "Gentleman's cabinetmaker and director"included. Condition : some discoloration to lower front cover, and slight dark staining to front and back covers: corners bumped: contents very clean and good overall firm, good, and collectable.
