After capture by the German Afrika Corps, imprisonment in Italy, and several attempted escapes, Miller escaped from the train transporting him to Germany and set out determinedly to reach London and freedom: speaking fluent French (he had been the Daily Express Paris correspondent at the beginning of the war) he posed as a French labourer on his hazardous journey , returning eventually to London, where he was decorated for bravery. His subsiquent training for operations behind enemy lines in France is related in a sequel entitled The Maquis .
