Social Sciences / Anthropology & Sociology / In The Kirghiz Steppes by J W Wardell J W Wardell In The Kirghiz Steppes by J W Wardell. The Galley press, London: 1961 first edition hardback in dust jacket; 190 pages including index: 47 photographic illustrations and 4 maps. Synopsis: For five years from 1914 the author worked in the steppes of Southern Siberia, now called Kazakhstan, mining copper for the Tsarist Government and later for Admiral Koltchak. He describes an oriental “wild west “ a British mining community 550mi. from a railway station in a region unknown even to most Russians then, or now. In times of revolution and counter-revolution the mine continued in production and during the war of the intervention it functioned for the benefit of the white armies. The author reveals intriguing things; including a firsthand account of the Kazakh tribesman who are descendants of the fierce hordes of Genghis Khan- perhaps most valuable of all, the book surveys the life and ideas of the provincial Russian in many ways so different from the Muscovites met by tourists of the time. In contrast to many countries where most of the people lived in a few large cities, the rural provincials formed the background of Russia. The author wrote” I do not think that many Englishmen have visited Kazakhstan since I left it and as the conditions of life depicted will never return I feel they should be recorded .”
