Editio Postrema: small brown calf volume approximately 2.5 x 4 inches tall ; covers bordered with gilt Greek key pattern: spine divided into five panels: second panel darker showing two lower lines of gilt title : the other four panels decorated with Grecian style covered vase in gilt. 215 pages; mottled end papers . Comments: John Owen (1563-1622) the Welsh epigrammatist, known as the "British Martial" for his mastery of the Latin language, published the first 3 parts of his his "Epigrammata" in 1606, 1607 and 1612. He outraged The Roman Catholic Church who placed his works on the Index of Forbidden Books in 1654. Condition : corners bumped: spine ends slightly worn: spine / front edge worn: small circular indentation to leather of upper front cover : thumb print size area of leather missing back cover nearest spine; small area leather missing lower back cover: Phoenix crest above "W. Johnston's Book" stamped in black to front end paper: pencilled ownership inscription "W. Johnston" on following blank page: small tear to lower corner page 207: small dark mark to pages 16, 20 and 22: a few minute ink lines to margins: contents clean and good: overall firm, acceptable, and collectable.
