The book reveals the solution to some of the mysteries of modern intelligence history, including  the identity of the British fifth man, the Soviet spy codenamed Eddie( previously misidentified as Sir Roger Hollis) the Soviet spy codenamed Elli,  and the men considered by the KGB to be its most important agents in the United States and Europe.  It describes RYAN,  the KGB operation based on the Kremlin's fear  in the early 1980's of a surprise nuclear  strike by the West; and the KGB operations against Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan, and the European Community; the war in Afghanistan; the destruction of the Korean airlines flight 007; the killing of WPC Fletcher; the relationship of the Soviet Union to Fidel Castro; Bulgarian  assassination squads; Gorbachev's relations with the KGB; and the disintegration of the Soviet  block.  The author, Christopher Andrew is a Cambridge historian and presenter of historical documentaries on television. The co- author  Oleg Gordievsky, former KGB colonel and resident designate in London at the time of his escape from the Soviet Union in 1985, had worked for British intelligence as the penetration agent inside the KGB from 1974, and was responsible for  preparing a highly classified KGB history of its operations in Britain and other Western Countries.
