The book includes detailed designs of 20 shallow draft cruisers, and autobiographical accounts of sailing in the Hebrides and the Thames Estuary. The author, Maurice Griffis, editor of the Yachting Monthly for 40 years, bought his first boat, a six ton cutter in 1921, and learned to sail on the river Orwell. He studied naval architecture and designed his first cruising yacht in 1928. Since then over 1300 yachts have been built to his design . For many years he led the development of shallow draft cruising yachts with centre boards and later bilge keels, the comfortable accommodation and self -righting capabilities of his designs making them safe and popular family boats, with at least two of his designs sailing round the world.
