William Moffat recounts the more colourful events of Shetland's history,  including the  coming of the Norseman and Vikings;  the  settlement of the islands : the time of the Spanish Armada; the great Dutch fishery; the troubled periods   of  Patrick Stewart , piracy;  and the press-gang;  whale fishing; and the development of the fishing centre of Lerwick.  Chapters   entitled : -- In the morning of time.  The coming of the Vikings.  The Viking settlement.  The baiting of  Harald.  The Udaller.  The Law -givers .  A Spanish  grandee on  a fair isle.  Patrick smokes his pipe. Mynheer - his mark.  In the King's name.  The Far Haaf. There she blows.  Smacks.  King of the sea.  The crofter.  Picts  to planes.  Envoi .
