Synopsis:  The world-famous collection of short stories written by Giovanni Boccaccio (born circa 1313, 48 years before Dante, 9 years before Petrarch, and 27 years before Chaucer.)  The Decameron was probably written between 1348 and 1353 and the author was about 40 at its completion.  Based on Boccaccio's colourful  life experiences and material gathered from French, Italian and Oriental sources, the first complete English translation appeared in 1620; and material from the hundred stories was subsequently used by Chaucer in five of the Canterbury Tales; by Shakespeare in  Alls Well That Ends Well, and Cymbeline; and by Fletcher, Marston, Tourneur, Otway , Dryden, Pope, Keats, Tennyson, Swinburn and others.  Condition: edges of the dust jackets damaged and repaired: endpapers and page edgings foxed: hardcovers and contents very clean and good.Folio Society invoice to M N Williams, esq, Abingdon School, Berkshire dated 14.10.55 enclosed.
