Synopsis: Rather than writing a full biography, (Lord Radcliffe had destroyed all his personal papers], in this volume Edmund Heward records the magnitude of his subject's public service, first outlining his following achievements in a two page preface . Over a period of forty years Lord Radcliffe served as Director- General of the Ministry of Information: as a Commissioner to divide India, and to make a new constitution for Cyprus: as Chairman of a Royal Commission to revise the tax laws: as Chairman of a committee to consider the monetary system: and as Chairman of a number of security enquiries. He had many interests in the educational and cultural worlds. He was Chairman of the trustees of the British Museum, Vice -chairman of the Court of London University, and Chairman of the Advisory Committee of the BBC. He was a collector of French impressionist and other paintings, and lectured on a variety of subjects from the law to Rudyard Kipling. He was the Reith Lecturer for the BBC, and wrote and spoke in great style. Only two ambitions evaded him: he failed to build the new British Library on the Bloomsbury site; and although his friend, Gulbenkian intended he be chairman of a World Wide foundation for the Arts, he failed to establish the trusts before his death , and Radcliffe felt unable to agree to the terms required by the Portuguese Government .The author describes his subject as a romantic, outwardly formidable , inwardly sensitive; with a keen sense of humour, and held in warm affection by family and close friends.
