Synopsis: a comprehensive biography of Winston Churchill's friend, scientific adviser, and cabinet colleague, written by Lord Birkenhead (Winston Churchill's godson) with the use of  private papers, and contributions from relations and friends.  Lord Cherwell , generally known as The Prof,  born in 1886,   made his  scientific reputation while working in laboratories in Berlin before the First World War in the company of Einstein and Planck.  During the war he joined the research establishment of the Royal Aircraft Factory at Farnborough where he demonstrated  ingenuity and personal courage, involving a formula for getting  aircraft out of a spin, and learning to fly in order to prove that his technique would work.  In 1919 he was elected Professor of Experimental Philosophy at Oxford, a position he held almost until the end of his life.   During this period he became acquainted with Sir Winston Churchill, sharing his alarm at the state of England's  defences and the  intentions of Germany.  He became an adviser and intimate friend,  forming an   association which lasted throughout the war.  His interest spread from scientific matters to economics, and his influence in both these fields  have been fully revealed in this biography .  Condition:  dust cover somewhat tired , and with a small repair ;  occasional foxing throughout;   slight separation between   frontispiece and title page.
