- Description: George Harrap, 1962: first edition hardcover in dust jacket: approximately 8.5 x 11.5 inches tall: unpaginated with approximately 20 pages of text followed by 242 coloured illustrations (mainly half page but with the occasional full-page plate) of Rose Varieties, and famous Rose Gardens. Synopsis: Bertram Park, Rosarian and Photographer, presents some 128 pages of full-colour illustrations portraying 230 varieties of Rose; followed by alphabetically arranged descriptions and notes on colour, habit of growth, freedom of flowering, disease resistance, and other characteristics. He describes Rose Gardens in America, France, Spain, Italy, and Switzerland, including the Queen Mary Rose Garden in Regent Park London and the Golden Walk at Sir Winston Churchill's home at Chartwell. The illustrations include:- the original species, the Gallicus, Albas, and Centifolias, the 19th-century hybrids, the 20th-century floribundas, climbers, shrub roses, hybrid tea, and miniature varieties. An introduction traces the history of the Rose and the lineage from the old varieties to the modern hybrid; preceding this introduction is a list of rose varieties and rose gardens illustrated in the book; and an alphabetically ordered description of each variety concludes the volume. The author Bertram Park, 20th-century Vice President of the National Rose Society, and author of other books on the cultivation of the Rose, was editor of the National Rose Society's Annual, and judged roses at the International Rose Shows in Lyon, Bagatelle, Geneva, Rome, Madrid, and Baden- Baden. He was awarded the Victoria Medal of Honour of the Royal Horticultural Society.; and his roses ' June Park ' and ' LadyZia ' won Gold Medals, the highest award of the National Rose Society. As a photographer he held the Royal Warrant by Appointment to his Majesty King George VI. Condition: dust jacket worn: with rubbed edges, repairs, and price corner removed. Cherry coloured cloth hardcover and contents very clean and good.
