Fanny and older sister, Emily ( author of Up The Country , first published 1866) accompanied their brother to Calcutta in 1835 to act as hostesses for his official duties - a life of constant entertaining, shaking hands, dinner parties , and polite conversation with scores of officials . By 1837, the combination of unremitting social duty and stifling climate affected Fanny’s health- her remedy was to accompany her nephew, William Osborn on a tiger shoot. Fanny recorded their progress in her journals, illustrating the accounts of the trip to the Rajmahal Hills, her progress through the Upper Provinces, and her visit to the court of Ranjit Singh .
