Rowse and Michael Ratcliffe questioning and assessing his claims ; an article by Dr A L Rowse entitled " The reception of my Shakespeare" published in The Times on the 17th of January 1984 in which he responds to the criticism of his book; a letter concerning the same subject published on the fourth of September 1963 by J. Dover Wilson; an article published on the same day by Ivor Brown ; a critical essay on the work of Dr A. L. Rowse by Stanley Wells published in the Sunday Times on September 8, 1989: a letter from Mr Ivor Cook on the same subject published in The Times on 7th November 1969; and an article published in The Times on April 24th 1976 entitled" How the Bard found his way into the scriptures through a piece of secret writing " by Bishop Mark Hodson.
Synopsis: a biography written by Dr A L Rowse, prominent Elizabethan historian, published on the eve of Shakespeare's quarter centenary, examining the problems of Shakespeare's life and work. The author claimed to have solved the problem of the sonnets; to have discovered the date and occasion of the first performance of a Midsummer Night's Dream; to have provided the missing clue to Love's Labours Lost; to have thrown new light on the context of Romeo and Juliet; and to have illuminated the history and political plays by the light of the events of the time.
