When the claimant arrived in England from Australia he was recognised and endorsed by the mother of Roger, the family doctor , the family solicitor and family servants ; while the rest of the family repudiated him as an impostor. Victorian England quickly became passionately interested in the controversy which progressed through the longest civil action, and longest criminal trial on record at the time , concluding with a jury verdict and Lord Chief Justice judgement that Arthur Orton, son of a Wapping butcher, had tried to pass himself off as someone whom he had never met or seen.
