Coverage includes the Roman Classical fortification ; the defensive sites of the Dark Ages; the growth of Feudalism; the Norman conquests in England and Sicily; the influence of the Crusades;  castle building in Europe under the Angevins and Hohenstaufens; the constitutional struggles of the 13th century; the fortified towns of Italy and France; the three great castle builders, Frederick the Second, St Louis, and Edward the First; and the intense activity and eventual demise of castle building caused by the Hundred Years War. The author, William Anderson, analyses castle construction against the political history and technological development of the Middle Ages, and includes a notable series of photographs taken in 11 countries by Wim Swann , with reproductions of engravings, paintings, and drawings of other castles at various points of their history.  Reproductions of manuscript paintings, sculpture, drawings, and mediaeval arms and armour are also included.  Condition: overall very clean and good.  Please note a heavy volume.
