Synopsis: A collection of 70 watercolour illustrations with descriptive comments taken from two sketchbooks compiled by Diana Sperling (aged in her early 20s) between 1812 and 1823, depicting a Regency family enjoying country life and rural pursuits. The family at dinner, playing shuttlecock, breaking in and racing  donkeys, playing bowls, fishing, skating, riding, planting, hunting, walking in the snow and the rain, digging out a wasps nest, extracting oil from lavender, visiting their neighbours, and of course Mrs Hurst dancing are among the diverse subjects of the 70 colourful illustrations. Facing pages contain biographical details with explanatory and historical notes by Gordon Mingay. An unattached letter disputing the description of the instrument depicted in Mrs Hurst dancing as a harpsichord and describing it instead as a square piano first made about 1760, is included with the book. Condition: lacks dust jacket: overall very clean, firm and good used books
