The ship girder: standard calculation, the wave, weight distribution, buoyancy and balance, loading, material considerations, problems.  Structural design and analysis: loading and failure, stiffened plating, panels and plating, frameworks, finite element techniques, realistic assessment of structural elements, fittings.  Launching and docking: launching curves, and groundways, launching dynamics, docking, block behaviour, stability.  The ship environmental and human factors: the external environment, the sea, waves, climate, the air, lighting, vibration and noise.  Each topic is accompanied by problems and answers.
