Following a forward by James Lawford, the volume includes- Part One, The horse in war, a pictorial review of the cavalry charger and the mounted soldier, their roles, equipment and training.  Part two,The story of the Cavalry,  with 15 chapters tracing and assessing the performance of cavalry from the time of the Assyrians to the end of World War I.( Origins, The Huns, Charlemagne and the dawn of chivalry, The Mongols, Decline of the Knight, The 30 years War, The English Civil War, The Age of the Sun King, The Age of Frederick the Great, The Moguls and the Mahrattas, The Napoleonic Wars, The Crimean War, Colonial Cavalry, US Cavalry and the Civil War, The Twilight of The Cavalry.)
