He records the unremitting struggles of the battle, the bravery of his comrades, the confusion,  the mistakes, the horrific injuries and the ever wearying cold.  The  letters record  incidents of fighting elsewhere, including  the  Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaclava; and the quieter moments at camp, the friendships between the men, and surprisingly humourous and colourful anecdotes.
