Travelling at the age of 42 in 1764 after the Seven Years War, during a lull in French/English hostilities at the time of the Grand Tour when an estimated 40,000 Britons were travelling on the continent, Doctor Smollett, his wife, manservant and two young ladies under Mrs Smollett's care sailed from Dover to Boulogne, from whence they travelled via Paris and Montpellier to Nice, before sailing along the Riviera coast to visit Genoa, Siena,Florence, Rome and other less notable Italian cities.
