Black and white illustrations, diagrams, and maps: full-page colour plates.Synopsis:  A two volume set,  series 1 of the African Handbook of Birds: a comprehensive handbook arranged species by species, with over views of each species including detailed description arranged as Keys, followed by distinguishing characters, general distribution and range, habits, nests and eggs, recorded breeding, food, and call.  Volume 1 includes the following groups: -- Ostriches, Grebes, Petrels and Shearwaters, Tropic Birds, Boobys and Gannets, Cormorants, Darter, Frigate Birds, Pelicans, Herons Egrets and Bitterns, Hammerkops  Storks , Ibises and Spoonbills, Flamingos, Ducks and Geese, Birds of Prey, Gamebirds, Rails Crakes Moorhens and Coots, Finfoot, Cranes, Bustards , Thicknees, Jacanas, Plovers, Oyster-Catcher Avocet and Stilt, Painted Snipe, Snipe, Waders, Phalaropes, Coursers and Pratincoles.  Volume 2 includes the following groups: -- Larks, Wagtails and Pipits, Babblers, Bulbuls, Flycatchers, Thrushes,  Warblers, Swallows, Cuckoo Shrikes, Drongos, Shrikes, Hypocolius, Tits, Orioles Crows, Starlings, White-eyes, Sunbirds, Creepers, Weavers and Waxbills, Finches, Buntings.  Comprehensive colour illustration to aid identification is included in each section, together with black and white diagrams defining distribution. CONDITION: Discolouration to covers: area of "bubbling" to back cover of vol 2: corners and spine ends bumped: ownership inscription P A Lander and light foxing to endpapers: volume 1 has small (half  inch square) marks caused by residual adhesive to edge of colour plates: otherwise contents very clean: overall firm, good, and collectable.
