Engineering & Technology / Sailing and Ships / Travelling by Sea in the Nineteenth Century. Interior Design in Victorian Passenger Ships by Basil Greenhill Ann Giffard Basil Greenhill Ann Giffard Adam and Charles Black, 1972: first edition: green cloth hardcover with gilt lettering to spine: dust jacket: approximately 7.5 x 10 inches tall: 168 pages including index: black and white illustrations including 78 plates, many of liner interiors. Synopsis: A detailed , illustrated description of travelling by sea in the 19th century. Using contemporary accounts and illustrations often previously unpublished, Basil Greenhill charts the development of the sailing steamship in the 19th century and the gradual improvement of facilities, accommodation and food on board. He records the social, naval, domestic, and interior design developments of a century which at its beginning saw wealthy passengers taking their own furniture, livestock required for food during the journey being kept on deck, and a universal use of the all-purpose saloon. He monitors the introduction of the library and music room; the replacement of wooden partitions by luxurious state rooms ; propulsion developing from sail to steam and paddle, and the arrival of the great oceangoing "Travelling Palaces" with the excessive interior decoration of the 1890s. Black and white photographs (many full page, showing the interiors of identified passenger liners) have been selected from the National Maritime Museum's collection.
