Synopsis: The story of the Alabama, a thousand ton wooden barquentine, commissioned by the Confederate States of America as a merchantman to be built by Lairds at Birkenhead in Britain in 1862. Subsequently converted to a powerful warship captained by Raphael Semmes the vessel was  used  to cripple Northern seapower in the American Civil War; and during two years  intercepted and burned 53 American merchantmen, released nine others on ransom bond, sold one outright, and sank the U.S.S. Hatteras- sent by the opposing North to destroy her . Captain Semmes, formerly of the United States Navy, endured a motley, sometimes rebellious crew, no opportunity to have his ship overhauled, and an encounter with two ferocious hurricanes. His battleship, in dire need of an overhaul and by now unfit for combat, was sunk in the English Channel by the United States Warship, Kearsarge on June 19, 1864 and in 1873 the United States of America were awarded one third of their £9 million claim for compensation against the British Government. Condition dust jacket tired with some creasing and rubbed edges: indentation and slight discolouration to front cover: contents clean: overall clean and good: used books
