Law / Law / Trial of John Thomas Straffen notable British trials series, volume 80 by Leticia Fairfield Eric P Fullbrook (editors) Leticia Fairfield Eric P Fullbrook (editors) William Hodge & Co Ltd, 1954: first edition: red cloth hardcover with gilt lettering to spine: dust jacket: approximately 5.6 by 8.6 inches tall: 298 pages: black and white photographic illustrations: fold- in black and white maps. Synopsis: Volume 60 of the 'Notable British Trials' series featuring the trial of John Thomas Straffen, who although previously found unfit to plead and committed to Broadmoor in 1951, was brought for trial at the Winchester Assizes in July 1952, where his plea of insanity was rejected by the jury who sentenced him to death . He was later reprieved on the advice of the Home Secretary. The unusual features of the trial the first time an escaped patient from Broadmoor had been tried for murder; the first time that a man found unfit to plead in one murder trial had been considered sane enough to stand trial on a similar charge a few months later; the complicated and obscure problem of a mentally defective murderer responsibility for his actions; and the debate of the McNaghten rules by medical witnesses and lawyers-add a special interest to this case. Both editors had previous experience of and involvement in this and similar cases. Condition dust jacket tired, damaged and repaired: slight discolouration and ownership inscription to end papers:
